Phyllis Jean Metheny's Obituary
Phyllis Jean Metheny, 88 of Newark joined her beloved husband, David and her dear daughter Ruth in heaven May 25, 2026.
She was born April 10, 1938 in Gary, WV a daughter of the late Clarence and Gertrude (Curley) Johnson. She was raised in a holler and spent her days sliding down the coal hills and walking the high road to her grandma’s house.
Phyllis met David at 13 and they were married the day she turned 15. Ten day’s later David left for the Army. Together they had four children, Mark , Dean Ruth and Dan; an abundance of grandchildren and great grandchildren; and her precious Teghan and Kendrix.
She was employed by Basley’s Meat Market, LMH and Lakewood Schools. She attended Living Hope Community Church with her dear friends and caregivers Kim (Leonard) Littlejohn. Phyllis was the kind of lady that you were instantly drawn to by her bright white hair and her welcoming smile. She was cherished by her church family and was someone you could always count on.
Friends may visit from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Living Hope Community Church, 8135 Mt. Vernon Road, St. Louisville.
A funeral service celebrating her life will follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor Jon Earls officiating.
