Verlin Mathis' Obituary
A funeral service for Verlin Mathis, 87 of Newark will be held Thursday May 7, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. in the sanctuary of Church of God, God’s Acres, 675 N. Cedar Street with Pastor Roger Decker officiating. Burial will be in Smith Chapel Cemetery.
Mr. Mathis died Monday May 4, 2015 at the Selma Markowitz Care Center operated by Hospice of Central Ohio. He was born in Newton County, Arkansas on August 10, 1927 to the late Charley J. and Pearl (Patton) Mathis.
Mr. Mathis retired in 1987 as a machinist at Owens-Corning Fiberglas with 36 years of service. He was a 50 year member of Local 1280, IAMAW. He attended the Church of God, God’s Acres. He was known by many children as “Mr. Bluebird” for having driven the Bible School bus for many years. Raised in Arkansas he stayed a loyal fan to the Arkansas Razorbacks.
He is survived by his children, Marilyn Ponser, Kathy (Jeff) Wells, Barb (Steve) Green, Jeannette (Rex) Romine, Fred (Karen) Mathis all of Newark; fifteen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Larry Davis of Newark; nieces, nephews and extended family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Freda E. (Davis) Mathis, who died on January 13, 2011; sisters, Willene Barker, Imogene Unternaher; brothers, Ivan Mathis, Dexter Mathis, Leo Mathis; granddaughter, Wanda Chenault; great-grandson, Samuel Green.
Calling hours will be observed Wednesday May 6, 2015 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Newark Chapel of VENSIL & CHUTE FUNERAL HOME, 1850 West Main Street. Additional calling hours will be observed Thursday May 7th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Church of God, God’s Acres, 675 N. Cedar Street.
