Robert Wiechel's Obituary
Robert Wiechel passed away August 29, 2015, in Newark, Ohio. He was born January 3, 1925, in Port Clinton, Ohio, to George and Margaret (Cummer) Wiechel. Bob was a graduate of Scott High School in Toledo, Marquette University, and the University of Toledo. He served in the United States Navy during WWII and in the naval reserves for 32 years, retiring as a lieutenant commander. He worked as an engineer at the Newark Air Force base.
Mr. Wiechel was a member of Newark First United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Candle Lighters. He was also a past member of the Heath Moundbuilders Kiwanis, and served as lieutenant governor of the State of Ohio Kiwanis. He was active in scouting as a scoutmaster of Troop 12, a member of Order of the Arrow, and a recipient of the Silver Beaver award. He also participated in the American Legion, the Newark Council of Churches, and the Wally Byam Caravan Club. With his first wife, Mary, he led several cross country caravans, including their favorite along the Lewis and Clark trail.
Mr. Wiechel was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of more than 60 years, Mary (Kohn) Wiechel. Survivors include his wife, Edith (Noel) Charter Wiechel, daughter Martha E. (Dr. Jeff) Rothermel of Huntsville, AL, sons, Rev. David R. (Rev. Barbara) Wiechel of Dayton, OH, Dr. John F. (Patty) Wiechel of Worthington, OH, and Thomas H. (Vicki) Wiechel of Middletown, OH, stepdaughter Yvonne Charter of Richmond, VA, 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, cousin Jean Ogle, cousin-in-law Bonnie Wallace, and aunt-in-law Margaret Osborn.
A celebration of Bob's life will take place Saturday, September 12, 2015, 11:00 a.m. at Newark First United Methodist Church, 88 N. Fifth St., Newark, OH, with Rev. Todd Frail presiding. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church or Hospice of Central Ohio.
