Rev. Raymond V. Sunkel's Obituary
A celebration of life for Rev. Raymond V. Sunkel, 87 of Jacksontown will be held Wednesday August 9, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Newark Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home with Dr. Tracy Fowler officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.
Rev. Sunkel died Friday August 4, 2017 at the Selma Markowitz Care Center operated by Hospice of Central Ohio. He was born December 8, 1929 in Coshocton County to Earl Phillip and Nellie Irene Sunkel.
Rev. Sunkel served Licking County congregations for over 50 years, including the Westside Chapel, Heath Christian Union and Plymouth Church. He was retired from the maintenance department at Licking Memorial Hospital. He had also been employed by the Newark Air Force Base and Western Auto. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
He enjoyed traveling in the Smokey Mountains. He had an extensive library of books and collected eagles and lighthouses in his pastime. He had played the guitar throughout his life and favored gospel music. His family was very special to him.
He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Mary L. (Dodrill) Layman; children Carol (Steve) Davis of Newark, Steven (Mary) Sunkel of Canal Winchester, David (Aleta) Sunkel of Sevierville, TN, Sandy (Jeff) Lothes of Newark, John Sunkel of Louisville, KY; eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; step-children, Karen Williams (Charlie Cotton), Debbie (Barry) Swinehart, William Edward Layman all of Newark; several step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren; close friends Jack (Becky) Dodrill.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-five years, Sara M. (Elliott) Sunkel, whom died October 26, 2007.
Calling hours will be observed Tuesday August 8, 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Newark Chapel of VENSIL & CHUTE FUNERAL HOME 1850 West Main Street.
