R. Dennis "Gilbo" Gilbert's Obituary
A memorial service for R. Dennis “Gilbo” Gilbert, 74 of Newark will be held Wednesday December 31, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in the Newark Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home with Deacon Robert Ghiloni as celebrant.
Mr. Gilbert died Friday, December 26, 2014 at the Selma Markowitz Care Center operated by Hospice of Central Ohio. He was born November 11, 1940 in Newark to the late Robert D. Gilbert and Martha (Poff) Gilbert-Reinhart.
Denny attended Newark High School and received a degree in Political Science from Franklin University. He served in the International Guard and is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He worked for the Newark Police Department and was a tremendous writer, working as a columnist for The Newark Advocate and the Dayton Daily News. He was an advance man for Gov. Gilligan during his tenure as Governor of Ohio and for Governor Walker of Illinois. He worked for Jim Petro at the State Auditor’s Office and in public affairs for the Ohio Youth Commission. He was an administrator for Shepherd Hill and did investigation work for Judge Frost. He enjoyed reading. A favorite pastime was watching NASCAR. Corvettes were his # 1 choice for an automobile.
He is survived by his children, Holly Chanel Barrett of Oklahoma City, OK, Heather Ann (Timothy) Duit of Edmond, OK, Chad (Claudia) Brodkin of Blacksburg, VA; the loves of his life were his grandchildren, Haley Duit, Chloe Duit, Jessie Duit, Lily-Kate Duit, Kallen Autry; sister, Molly (Larry) McLaughlin of Jesup, GA; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, T.
Robert Gilbert and best friend, Tom “Huck” Vogelmeier.
Visitation will be observed one hour prior to the services at the funeral Home 1850 West Main Street.
