James J. Young's Obituary
GRANVILLE: James J. “Jim” Young, 88, of Granville, formerly of Hilton Head Island, SC, passed away Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at Kendal at Granville.
Mr. Young was born October 20, 1927 in Wildwood, NJ to the late David and Louisa (Stairs) Young.
Mr. Young was a retired Vice President – Corporate Planning for Owens Corning Fiberglas Corporation. After retirement, he was a Senior Vice President of General Alum & Chemical Corporation. He then became a Senior Lecturer and Executive-in-Residence in the Department of Marketing at Bowling Green State University.
He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He received an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Young began his career with Owens Corning in manufacturing at Newark, OH. He was promoted to Plant Superintendent of the Barrington, NJ plant and later was the Plant Manager in Kansas City, KS. He was promoted to Owens Corning’s headquarters in Toledo, OH where he was Vice President of the Resins and Coating Division and later Vice President of Corporate Planning reporting to the Chairman and CEO.
Professionally, Mr. Young had been a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Chemical Manufacturers Association, the Society of the Plastics Industry and the National Petroleum Refiners Association. He was a Registered Professional Engineer.
Mr. Young was a past President of the Board of Directors of the Sylvania Country Club in Sylvania, OH and of the Sea Pines Country Club in Hilton Head, SC. He was a member and Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head, SC and served on the Sea Pines Board of CSA and ASPPO. He was an avid golfer, sailor and reader of non-fiction.
Surviving are his children Philip (Cherri) Young of Centerville, OH and Joan (David) Trautman of Granville, OH; grandchildren, Austin Young, Jake Young, Ben Trautman, Will Trautman and Karen Trautman; sister, Sally Konstanzer of Kill Devil Hills, NC; and daughter-in-law, Martha Young of Alpharetta, GA.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Doris Young, April 12, 2016; and his two sons, David and Daniel Young.
A memorial service will take place at a later date at First Presbyterian Church, Hilton Head Island, SC.
