Hilton Durward "Dur" Masters' Obituary
A funeral service for Hilton Durward “Dur” Masters, 86 of Newark will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 10, 2017 in the Newark Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home with Deacon Patrick Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The Licking County Veteran’s Alliance will provide Military Funeral Honors.
Dur passed away unexpectedly Thursday, July 6, 2017 at his home. He was born February 14, 1931 in Newark to the late Hilton Masters and Dorothy (Corder) Masters-Zipperer. Dur was a 1949 graduate of Newark High School and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he served in occupied Germany following WWII. Dur worked in the railroad industry for 42 years. Starting out as a conductor/brakeman on the B&O Railroad and serving as local chairman of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. He later became International Vice-President of the United Transportation Union. He was an active member of many organizations including American Legion Post #85, VFW Post #1060, DAV,Crusader Lodge #720 F. & A. M., Scottish Rite, Licking Co. Shrine and F.O.E. #387. He was a Methodist by faith.
Dur was an avid sports fan, he loved the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians and virtually any sporting activity, especially if it involved his grandsons. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and granddad, as well as a generous man whose generosity was unsurpassed. He was a gentle giant, an animal lover and loved the company of his host of friends.
Survivors include his beloved daughter, Susan (Tim) Moore of Newark; his grandsons, Brian Moore, Tyler (Natasha) Moore; great grandson, Jackson Moore, all of Newark; a sister in-law, Nancy Masters; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Dur was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ruth Marie (Stough) Masters, whom he married May 9, 1954 and who died November 9, 2015; and brothers, William Dwayne Masters and Fred Zipperer; and several “furry friends”.
Friends and family may visit 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 9, 2017 at VENSIL & CHUTE FUNERAL HOME, 1850 W. Main Street, Newark.
