Carolyn J. Thompson's Obituary
A funeral service for Carolyn Jane Thompson, 91 of Newark will be held Tuesday July 18, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary of Second Presbyterian Church, 42 E. Church Street. Burial will be in Newark Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Thompson died Friday July 14, 2017 at the Selma Markowitz Care Center, surrounded by family. She was born May 30, 1926 in Marshall County, West Virginia to the late William James and Mildred Clair (Cusack) Harris.
Mrs. Thompson worked in Dr. Frye’s medical office and after she retired, served as the bookkeeper at Quality Cleaners.
Mrs. Thompson was very social and involved within her community. She was a member at Second Presbyterian Church for over 60 years, currently volunteering with the food pantry. She was active in two Euchre Clubs, a Bingo night and Manna Ministries. She would complete crossword and picture puzzles at home and was an avid reader. She and her husband had enjoyed traveling. She was a former member of the Newark Chapter #305 O.E.S., Zonta Club, and Elks Ladies Auxiliary. She had also been active with the Licking County Symphony and a docent for the Licking County Art Association.
Survivors include her children, William Thompson of Newark, Michael Thompson of The Philippines, Trudie (Mike) Gummer of Newark; sisters, Helen Bickle of Heath, Nancy (Russ) McGinnis of FL, Peggy Miller of Newark; grandchildren, Will (Jennifer) Thompson of Harrisburg, PA, Cara Thompson and Dr. Areck Ucuzian of Phoenix, MD, Michelle (Phil) Giannaris of Atlanta, GA, Tamara Thompson (Shanna) Miller of Zanesville, Megan (Chris) Holton of Newark, Erinn (Colin) Duffy of San Diego, CA; great-grandchildren, Ian, Cameron, Nathan, Aden Thompson, Nikolas, Natalie Carolyn Giannaris, Casen Holton, Eliott Ucuzian; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Thompson of Columbus, Leona Thompson of Newark; several nieces, nephews; many close long-time friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, William L. Thompson, December 18, 2007; brother, William Harris; step-mother, Evelyn Harris.
Calling hours will be observed Monday July 17, 2017 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Newark Chapel of VENSIL & CHUTE FUNERAL HOME 1850 West Main Street and one hour prior to services on Tuesday at the church.
The family requests memorial contributions to the Foundation for Hospice of Central Ohio, P.O. Box 430, Newark, OH 43055-0430. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
