Betty Zane's Obituary
NEWARK: Funeral services for Betty Zane Schneider Ketner, 96 of Newark, formerly of Zanesville will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 11, 2011 at First United Methodist Church, 88 N. 5th Street, Newark with Reverend Charles Rader officiating. Burial will follow at Hanover Cemetery.
Betty died peacefully on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at Autumn Healthcare Facility with family at her side. She was born in Zanesville, Ohio on August 4, 1914, the third of four children to the late Ernest and Cleo Cool (Mitchell) Schneider.
Affectionately known as Betty Zane by friends and family, she led a very spirited, colorful and joyful life. Married to Jack D. Ketner of Toboso, Ohio, together they had two children.
In addition to enjoying her roles as wife and mother, Betty also pursued a career in the hearing aid industry for most of her adult life; working many years for Brown & Howlett. Suffering a hearing loss as a young child she followed the evolution of hearing aid technology. What started as a very personal experience soon transformed into a mission to share her knowledge and support for others with hearing impairments. She very sincerely enjoyed helping others with similar challenges and eagerly shared her enthusiasm and expertiece in the area of Audiology. Because of her sincere and thoughtful approach, she was still receiving referrals from past customers and the Ohio Bureau of Rehabilitation when she finally retired from Hearing Aid Service and Sales in the early 2000’s. To honor her Fifty years as a hearing aid consultant she was made a lifetime member of the Ohio Hearing Aid Society.
Betty’s desire to help people extended into her volunteer pursuits as a member of organizations such as The Twentieth Century Club and Miriam Circle of First United Methodist Church of Newark. She was also a member of the Monday Talks, the Review Club and Research Club.
Betty is survived by her daughter Julie Ketner Barrett, of Newark; son and daughter in-law Robert I. and Peggy (Spring) Ketner of Granville She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Audrey A. Evans of Milwaukee, WI; David R Evans III, of Mackinaw IL; Dr. Betsy E. Evans of Seattle, WA; Bob Griffin of Olmsted Falls, OH; Ryan Ketner of New Carlisle, OH; Dr. Alisha Saultz of Portland, OR; Julie Marie Ketner of Newark, OH; six great grandchildren: Scott and Nic Evans, Bethany Goff, and Derek, Sharon and Alison Saultz. Her survivors also include numerous much-loved nieces and nephews; and many cousins and dear friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Jack D. Ketner in 1978. Her sister Martha S. Bolton, brothers, Bismarck E. Schneider and Hugo F. Schneider and son in-law, Ralph R. Barrett also preceded her in death.
Friends and family may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 10, 2011 at Vensil-Orr & Chute Funeral Home, 1850 W. Main Street, Newark.
